A visit to Lingshan

Today (Sunday, June 14) we went to the Buddhist theme park of Lingshan in Wuxi. Built on a hillside near the site of an ancient Buddhist temple in 1997 stands an 88 meter tall bronze Buddha. It is surrounded by several temples, including a spectacular Buddhist cathedral completed in 2007 that hosts gatherings of Buddhist conventions. The decorations are superlative, including a large Buddha of gold and silver built into the altar, and a sky show of lights that change every few seconds on the dome overhead the nave. It’s truly astounding the public and private investment that went into this place, that resembles a Buddhist Disney World and rivals any cathedral in the world as a kind of Eastern Mecca for Buddhists. After lunch, we took the bullet train back to Shanghai and met Amy and Steve Kong at the dorm at 6 pm for a tour of Fudan University, their Alma mater, where we had dinner with Becky Zhang’s grandfather, a retired Fudan University physics professor.
